This will acknowledge receipt of a request to proclaim the month of February 2024 as Black History month in the Municipality of Port Hope. Black History month provides an invaluable opportunity to recognize, honour and celebrate all people of Black Canadian descent. In Port Hope we believe in the importance of recognizing and promoting diversity, equality and the achievements of the Black community. Proclamation Whereas in 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada following a motion introduced by the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament; and Whereas Black Canadians have a long and rich history in Canada, shaping our country’s heritage and identity; and Whereas Black History Month is a time to acknowledge, honour and celebrate the many contributions that Black Canadians have made and continue to make to our collective cultural, spiritual, social, and economic development; and Whereas we recognize the continuing quest of Black Canadians for equal opportunity and freedom from discrimination; and Whereas advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, and anti-racism in collaboration with our community is of great importance to the Municipality; Now, Therefore, I Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope do hereby proclaim the month of February 2024 as Black History Month in the Municipality of Port Hope.
