Whereas in 2009, the Government of Canada declared the month of June as National Indigenous History Month by the passing of a unanimous motion in the House of Commons and is working to advance truth and reconciliation by building harmonious partnerships based on the recognition of rights, respect, truth, cooperation, humility, and friendship with First Peoples, including First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and in all communities across Canada, traditionally known as Turtle Island; and Whereas National Indigenous History Month takes place during June to commemorate the rich history, heritage, resiliency and diversity of First Nation, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada; and Whereas the Municipality of Port Hope recognizes and celebrates the significant and ongoing contributions of Indigenous Canadians in all aspects of daily life, including shaping identity, culture, advocacy, business, art, justice, sports and politics; and Whereas we recognize that National Indigenous History Month is an opportunity for all people to learn more about the history of the Indigenous Peoples in Canada; and Whereas the Municipality of Port Hope strives to be an inclusive community and encourages everyone to reflect and learn about the diverse experiences, knowledge and sacrifices that Indigenous Peoples have made in Canada; Now Therefore, I Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope do hereby proclaim June 2024 as National Indigenous History Month within the Municipality of Port Hope.
