Whereas the Canadian Human Rights Act states that “all Canadians have the right to equality, equal opportunity, fair treatment, and an environment free of discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status and family status”; and Whereas June is recognized across Canada as Pride month, allowing an opportunity to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and acceptance of all and recognizing the continued struggle for equity and human rights; and Whereas Pride Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of 2SLGBTQ+ lived experiences and to reflect on and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the rights of 2SLGBTQ+ communities; and Whereas flying the Progress Pride flag at Town Hall during the month of June symbolizes the Municipality’s celebration of diversity and support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community and is an important symbol of hope and acceptance for all; Now, Therefore, I Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope do hereby proclaim the month of June, 2024 as Pride Month within the Municipality of Port Hope.
