Whereas in 1995, the Canadian Parliament acknowledged February as Black History Month through a groundbreaking motion by the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman in Parliament; and
Whereas Black Canadians possess a profound and enduring legacy in the country, playing a pivotal role in shaping Canada’s heritage and identity; and
Whereas Black History Month offers an opportunity to recognize, commend, and celebrate the significant ongoing contributions of Black Canadians to our cultural, spiritual, social, and economic landscape; and
Whereas the pursuit of equality and the eradication of discrimination for Black Canadians remains a vital endeavor; and
Whereas promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, and anti-racism through community collaboration is a critical priority for the Municipality;
Now, Therefore, I Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope do hereby proclaim the month of February 2026 as Black History Month in the Municipality of Port Hope.
