Whereas in 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada following a motion introduced by the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament; and

Whereas in 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada following a motion introduced by the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament; and
Whereas Black Canadians have a long and rich history in Canada, shaping our country’s heritage and identity; and
Whereas Black History Month is a time to acknowledge, honour and celebrate the many contributions that Black Canadians have made and continue to make to our collective cultural, spiritual, social, and economic development; and
Whereas we recognize the continuing quest of Black Canadians for equal opportunity and freedom from discrimination; and
Whereas advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, and anti-racism in collaboration with our community is of great importance to the Municipality;
Now, Therefore, I Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope do hereby proclaim the month of February 2025 as Black History Month in the Municipality of Port Hope.
