Whereas the United Nations recognized 1975 as International Women’s Year and began formally celebrating March 8thas International Women’s Day, establishing the date as a global occasion for unity, visibility, and action; and
Whereas International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated in countries around the world, including Canada each year on March 8th to recognize and honour the social, cultural, economic, and political achievements of women, while reaffirming our collective commitment to advancing gender equity; and
Whereas municipalities across Ontario have historically acknowledged International Women’s Day by celebrating women’s contributions to our communities and raising awareness of the work still required to achieve full gender parity; and
Whereas despite significant progress, women and girls continue to face disproportionate barriers, including gaps in leadership representation, economic opportunity, safety, and access to essential social supports—reminding us of the ongoing need for advocacy and action; and
Whereas empowering women strengthens our communities, enriches civic life, and contributes to inclusive economic and social development;
Now, Therefore, I Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope do hereby proclaim March 8th 2026 as International Women’s Day in the Municipality of Port Hope.
