Whereas the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) introduced the first annual Mental Health Week across Canada in 1951, to raise awareness of mental illness.
Whereas CMHA defines mental health as “more than the absence of a mental health condition or illness: it is a positive sense of well-being, or the capacity to enjoy life and deal with the challenges we face”; and
Whereas building stronger connections—at home, at work, in schools, and in our communities—helps strengthen mental health, reduce stigma, and foster environments where people feel valued, supported, and included; and
Whereas Mental Health Week encourages individuals, organizations, and communities to take small, everyday actions that create moments of connection, promote empathy, and support mental wellness for themselves and others; and
Whereas promoting mental health and increasing awareness of mental health challenges are essential to building healthier, more resilient communities across Ontario and throughout Canada;
Now, Therefore, I Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope do hereby proclaim the week of May 4th-10th, 2026 as Mental Health Week in the Municipality of Port Hope.
