Whereas the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is celebrated annually on May 17th to commemorate the 1990 decision by the World Health Organization to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases, marking a critical milestone in the global movement toward recognizing the human rights and dignity of 2SLGBTQI+ people; and
Whereas despite some progress, individuals across the 2SLGBTQI+ communities continue to face discrimination, marginalization, violence, exclusion, and acts of homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia that undermine their safety, mental health, equal opportunity, and full participation in society; and
Whereas Ontario’s Human Rights Code affirms the right to equal treatment without discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, and aligns with the values of equity and inclusion upheld within our municipality; and
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world and is in accord with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as proclaimed by the United Nations;
Whereas the Municipality’s EDI Policy celebrates the diverse identities and experiences that enrich Port Hope and commits to creating equitable experiences, meaningful reconciliation, and safe and welcoming environments where everyone can thrive and contribute to a shared future;
Now, Therefore, I Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope do hereby proclaim May 17th, 2026 as International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia in the Municipality of Port Hope.
