Whereas World Suicide Prevention Day is observed annually on September 10 as a global initiative established by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), focusing worldwide attention on the shared belief that suicides are preventable; and
Whereas suicide claims more than 720,000 lives each year and profoundly affects families, friends, workplaces, and communities through far‑reaching social, emotional, and economic consequences; and
Whereas the triennial global theme for 2024–2026, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” calls on communities to challenge harmful myths, reduce stigma, and foster open, compassionate conversations—shifting from silence and misunderstanding to openness, empathy, and support so that people feel able to speak up and seek help; and
Whereas changing the narrative also requires systemic action—prioritizing mental health in public policy, improving access to quality, evidence‑based care, and ensuring that those in distress can reach timely support; and
Whereas starting conversations at home, in schools, workplaces, community spaces, and online can break down stigma, encourage help‑seeking, and build connected, supportive environments in which hope and recovery are possible;
Now, Therefore, I Olena Hankivsky, Mayor of the Municipality of Port Hope do hereby proclaim September 10th, 2026 as World Suicide Prevention Day in the Municipality of Port Hope.
