To commemorate what would have been Farley Mowat's 100th birthday on May 12, 2021, the Port Hope Rotary Club has inspired the proclamation of May 10 - 16 as Farley Mowat Week, and invites the community to honour Farley with these themed activities. A Farley Mowat Writing ContestOpen to residents of Port Hope and also to those living in Arviat, Nunavut. Three divisions will be considered: students in grades K to 8, students in grades 9 to 12 and an adult category. $100 prizes for the winning entry in each division in each community.  To participate, send your Arctic-themed poem, short story or essay to Furby House Books (by email or mail: 65 Walton St, Port Hope, ON L1A 1N2) by May 1st. Writing contest results will be announced at an online presentation on May 14 at 4:00 p.m. (To acess the online awards presentation visit this Zoom link. Meeting ID: 839 4057 5127, Passcode: 112428, Phone: 1-647-374-4685) Readings at St. Marks Anglican ChurchAfter an outstanding life and career as one of Canada’s most prolific writers and dedicated environmentalists Farley was laid to rest in the cemetery at St Mark’s Port Hope. St. Mark's, with Farley's wife Claire, have assembled five readers to deliver excerpts from some of his most telling tales. Readings to take place Wednesday, May 12, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m via zoom. Register here, or email a request for more details.  Wifi in the Wilderness PodcastListen to Wifi in the Wilderness, a one-time podcast hosted by Library staff that reviews Farley’s last CBC interview, to debate the benefits and downsides of wifi in Parks. Both of these literary partners encourage you to pick up a piece of Farley's work and get reading! Farley Mowat ParkThe Municipality of Port Hope authorized the re-naming of the east side of Rotary Park to Farley Mowat Park.
